RESUMO

High power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term stability are essential prerequisites for the commercialization of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) are core materials that have led to recent, rapid increases in the PCEs of the PSCs. However, a critical limitation of the resulting PSCs is their poor long-term stability. Blend morphology degradation from rapid diffusion of SMAs with low glass transition temperatures (Tgs) is considered the main cause of the poor long-term stability of the PSCs. The recent emergence of oligomerized SMAs (OSMAs), composed of two or more repeating SMA units (i.e., dimerized and trimerized SMAs), has shown great promise in overcoming these challenges. This innovation in material design has enabled OSMA-based PSCs to reach impressive PCEs near 19% and exceptional long-term stability. In this review, we summarize the evolution of OSMAs, including their research background and recent progress in molecular design. In particular, we discuss the mechanisms for high PCE and stability of OSMA-based PSCs and suggest useful design guidelines for high-performance OSMAs. Furthermore, we reflect on the existing hurdles and future directions for OSMA materials towards achieving commercially viable PSCs with high PCEs and operational stabilities.

RESUMO

To realize efficient, green solvent-processable organic solar cells (OSCs), considerable effort has been expended on the development of conjugated materials with both superior optoelectrical properties and processability. However, molecular design strategies that enhance solubility often reduce crystalline/electrical properties of the materials. In this study, we develop three new guest small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) (Y-4C-4O, Y-6C-4O, and Y-12C-4O) featuring inner side chains consisting of terminal oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) groups and alkyl spacers of different lengths. When a host SMA (Y6) and guest SMA (Y-nC-4O) are mixed, favorable interactions between these materials lead to the formation of "alloy-like" composites. The alloy-like SMA composites enable sufficient processing in o-xylene to afford suitable blend-film morphologies. It is also found that the lengths of the alkyl spacers in guest SMAs have a significant impact on the performance of the o-xylene-processed OSCs. The PM6:Y6:Y-4C-4O blend achieves a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.03%, outperforming PM6:Y6:Y-6C-4O (PCE = 15.85%) and PM6:Y6:Y-12C-4O (PCE = 12.12%) OSCs. The high PCE of the PM6:Y6:Y-4C-4O device is mainly attributed to the well-intermixed morphology and superior crystalline/electrical properties, which result from the high compatibility of the Y6:Y-4C-4O composites with PM6. Thus, we demonstrate that an alloy-like SMA composite based on well-designed OEG-incorporated Y-series SMAs can afford green solvent-processable, high-performance OSCs.

RESUMO

Chemical modifications of porous materials almost always result in loss of structural integrity, porosity, solubility, or stability. Previous attempts, so far, have not allowed any promising trend to unravel, perhaps because of the complexity of porous network frameworks. But the soluble porous polymers, the polymers of intrinsic microporosity, provide an excellent platform to develop a universal strategy for effective modification of functional groups for current demands in advanced applications. Here, we report complete transformation of PIM-1 nitriles into four previously inaccessible functional groups - ketones, alcohols, imines, and hydrazones - in a single step using volatile reagents and through a counter-intuitive non-solvent approach that enables surface area preservation. The modifications are simple, scalable, reproducible, and give record surface areas for modified PIM-1s despite at times having to pass up to two consecutive post-synthetic transformations. This unconventional dual-mode strategy offers valuable directions for chemical modification of porous materials.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are often diagnosed with the disease during their reproductive years; however, its incidence and prevalence among women of childbearing age have not been studied. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence and prevalence of seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (SPRA) among Korean women of childbearing age. METHODS: Women aged 20 to 44 years with SPRA were identified from National Health Insurance Service-National Health Information Database (2009 to 2016). SPRA was defined by International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision code, M05. Incidence and prevalence were calculated per 100,000 person-years and stratified by year and age. RESULTS: The average incidence and prevalence of SPRA from 2011 to 2016 among women of childbearing age was 24.1/100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval [CI], 23.7 to 24.5) and 105.2/100,000 person-years (95% CI, 100.9 to 109.5), respectively. The incidence increased annually from 21.0/100,000 person-years (95% CI, 20.1 to 21.9) in 2009 to 28.4 person-years (95% CI, 27.3 to 29.5) in 2016. Similarly, the prevalence increased annually from 95.7/100,000 person-years (95% CI, 93.7 to 97.6) in 2009 to 111.0 person-years (95% CI, 108.9 to 113.2) in 2015, with a slight decrease in 2016 (110.4 person-years; 95% CI, 108.2 to 112.6). The incidence and prevalence of SPRA increased with advancing age. The peak age for both incidence and prevalence of SPRA among women of childbearing age was 40 to 44 years. CONCLUSION: The risk of SPRA is high in women during their childbearing years; this population bears a significant disease burden. This calls for special attention to this particular population group to reduce the risk and burden of this disease.

RESUMO

Objectives: The incidence and prevalence of AAV in Asia remain poorly understood, especially in a nationwide setting. This study investigated the incidence, prevalence, and healthcare burden of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) in South Korea by analyzing a national database. Methods: This study included patients with AAV identified from the National Health Insurance Service Database of South Korea from 2002 to 2018. Patients were diagnosed with AAV in a general or tertiary hospital and were registered in the individual payment beneficiaries program or were prescribed glucocorticoids. A calendar-based meteorological definitions were adopted to assess the differences in the incidence of AAV according to season. The average healthcare expenditure and patient outcomes of mortality and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with AAV were compared to 1:10 age, sex and residential area matched controls. Results: A total of 2,113 patients [708, 638, and 767 with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, respectively] were identified. The annual incidence and prevalence of AAV increased continuously, and MPA being the most common disease subtype after 2015. The highest incidence and prevalence of AAV was 0.48/100,000 person-years (PY) and 2.40/100,000 PY in 2017 and 2018, respectively. There were no significant differences in monthly and seasonal incidence of AAV. The average expense of medical care, overall mortality, and ESRD rates of patients with AAV were higher in patients with AAV than in controls, especially in the case of MPA. Conclusion: An increasing trend of AAV diagnosis observed is consistent with the evidence that AAV is more common in recent years; however, a relatively lower incidence and prevalence was observed compared to that in Western countries. The higher medical cost and rates of mortality and ESRD in AAV emphasize the early recognition and implementation of optimal treatment for these patients.

RESUMO

Recent advances in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) have greatly enhanced their commercial viability. Considering the technical standards (e.g., mechanical robustness) required for wearable electronics, which are promising application platforms for OSCs, the development of fully stretchable OSCs (f-SOSCs) should be accelerated. Here, a comprehensive overview of f-SOSCs, which are aimed to reliably operate under various forms of mechanical stress, including bending and multidirectional stretching, is provided. First, the mechanical requirements of f-SOSCs, in terms of tensile and cohesion/adhesion properties, are summarized along with the experimental methods to evaluate those properties. Second, essential studies to make each layer of f-SOSCs stretchable and efficient are discussed, emphasizing strategies to simultaneously enhance the photovoltaic and mechanical properties of the active layer, ranging from material design to fabrication control. Key improvements to the other components/layers (i.e., substrate, electrodes, and interlayers) are also covered. Lastly, considering that f-SOSC research is in its infancy, the current challenges and future prospects are explored.

RESUMO

Organic indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) are attractive energy harvesting devices for low-power consumption electronic devices and the Internet of Things (IoTs) owing to their properties such as being lightweight, semitransparent, having multicoloring capability, and flexibility. It is important to match the absorption range of photoactive materials with the emission spectra of indoor light sources that have a visible range of 400-700 nm for IPVs to provide sustainable, high-power density. To this end, benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-based homopolymer (PBDTT) is synthesized as a polymer donor, which is a classical material that has a wide bandgap with a deep highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) level, and a series of random copolymers by incorporating thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6,-dione (TPD) as a weak electron acceptor unit in PBDTT. The composition of the TPD unit is varied to fine tune the absorption range of the polymers; the polymer containing 70% TPD (B30T70) perfectly covers the entire range of indoor lamps such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and fluorescent lamp (FL). Consequently, B30T70 shows a dramatic enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 1-sun (PCE: 6.0%) to the indoor environment (PCE: 18.3%) when fabricating organic IPVs by blending with PC71 BM. The simple, easy molecular design guidelines are suggested to develop photoactive materials for efficient organic IPVs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To determine the risk of pregnancy complications and adverse offspring outcomes in Korean women with rheumatic diseases (RDs). METHODS: Women aged 20-44 years with pregnancies ending in delivery were identified from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Information Database (2009-2016). Women with RD including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (SPRA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) (n = 4,284) were age-matched with controls (n = 26,023). Outcome variables included threatened abortion (TA), preterm birth (PB), preeclampsia/eclampsia (PE/E), intrauterine growth retardation (IGR), urinary tract infection, low birth weight (LBW) offsprings, and offspring death within 1 year of birth. RESULTS: Women with RDs had increased risks for cesarean section delivery (odds ratio [OR], 1.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4-1.6), TA (OR, 1.4; 95% CI, 1.2-1.5), PB (OR, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.9-3.2), PE/E (OR, 4.4; 95% CI, 3.3-5.9), and IGR (OR, 2.4; 95% CI, 2.0-3.1) than the controls. The risk of pregnancy complications was increased in SLE and SPRA pregnancies but not in AS pregnancies. Offsprings of women with RDs had an increased risk of LBW (OR, 4.0; 95% CI, 3.2-4.9). The offspring mortality rate within 1 year of birth was higher in women with RDs (6.2/10,000 persons) than in the controls (4.9/10,000 persons). CONCLUSION: Women with RDs are at a risk of developing pregnancy complications, and the risk of LBW offsprings and offspring death within 1 year of birth is increased in these women. Therefore, this population requires special attention during their childbearing years.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We aimed to estimate the prevalence of comorbidities and medication use in Korean women with rheumatic diseases (RDs) during their childbearing years. METHODS: We included women aged 20 to 44 years with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) (n = 41,547) and age-matched women without seropositive RA, SLE, and AS (n = 208,941) from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Information Database (2009 to 2016). The prevalence of hypertension (HTN), hyperlipidemia (HLD), diabetes mellitus (DM), and cancer and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids (CSs), and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) were estimated. RESULTS: Women of childbearing age with RDs were more likely to have at least one of the measured comorbidities than the controls (odds ratio [OR], 3.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.9 to 3.1). The OR (95% CI) was 2.9 (2.8 to 3.0) for HTN, 2.8 (2.7 to 2.9) for HLD, 1.4 (1.4 to 1.5) for DM, and 1.3 (1.3 to 1.4) for cancer. The SLE group had the highest prevalence and odds of all four measured comorbidities. Almost all (97.9%) women of childbearing age with RDs were taking RD-related medications (NSAIDs, 81.6%; CSs, 77.8%; DMARDs, 87.3%). The RD group was 13.8 times more likely to take NSAIDs and 68.2 times more likely to take CSs than the controls. Use of NSAIDs was more prevalent in RA and AS than SLE, whereas use of CSs and DMARDs was more prevalent in RA and SLE than AS. CONCLUSION: Korean women with RDs have a greater burden of comorbidities and medication use during their childbearing years than women without RDs of the same age.

RESUMO

Small-molecule acceptor (SMA)-based organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), while their long-term stabilities remain to be improved to meet the requirements for real applications. Herein, we demonstrate the use of donor-acceptor alternating copolymer-type compatibilizers (DACCs) in high-performance SMA-based OSCs, enhancing their PCE, thermal stability, and mechanical robustness simultaneously. Detailed experimental and computational studies reveal that the addition of DACCs to polymer donor (PD)-SMA blends effectively reduces PD-SMA interfacial tensions and stabilizes the interfaces, preventing the coalescence of the phase-separated domains. As a result, desired morphologies with exceptional thermal stability and mechanical robustness are obtained for the PD-SMA blends. The addition of 20 wt % DACCs affords OSCs with a PCE of 17.1% and a cohesive fracture energy (Gc) of 0.89 J m-2, higher than those (PCE = 13.6% and Gc = 0.35 J m-2) for the control OSCs without DACCs. Moreover, at an elevated temperature of 120 °C, the OSCs with 20 wt % DACC exhibit excellent morphological stability, retaining over 95% of the initial PCE after 300 h. In contrast, the control OSCs without the DACC rapidly degraded to below 60% of the initial PCE after 144 h.

RESUMO

Quinoxaline (Qx) derivatives are promising building units for efficient photovoltaic polymers owing to their strong light absorption and high charge-transport abilities, but they have been used exclusively in the construction of polymer donors. Herein, for the first time, Qx-based polymer acceptors (PA s) were developed by introducing electron-withdrawing cyano (CN) groups into the Qx moiety (QxCN). A series of QxCN-based PA s, P(QxCN-T2), P(QxCN-TVT), and P(QxCN-T3), were synthesized by copolymerizing the QxCN unit with bithiophene, (E)-1,2-di(thiophene-2-yl)ethene, and terthiophene, respectively. All of the PA s exhibited unipolar n-type characteristics with organic field-effect transistor (OFET) mobilities of around 10-2  cm2 V-1 s-1 . In space-charge-limited current devices, P(QxCN-T2) and P(QxCN-TVT) exhibited electron mobilities greater than 1.0×10-4  cm2 V-1 s-1 , due to the well-ordered structure with tight π-π stacking. When the PA s were applied in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), the highest performance of 5.32 % was achieved in the P(QxCN-T2)-based device. These results demonstrate the significant potential of Qx-based PA s for high-performance all-PSCs and OFETs.

RESUMO

Macrophages play a major role in innate immune responses by producing a variety of immune mediators and cytokines. The stimulation of macrophages by natural products may lead to an enhanced innate immune system. This study evaluated the immunostimulatory effects of a polysaccharide-rich crude fraction of Celosia cristata L. flowers (CCP) on murine macrophages. CCP treatment induced the production of inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and cytokines by macrophages. Mechanistically, the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, NF-κB and toll-like receptor 4 were found to be associated with the stimulatory functions of CCP. CCP was found to be primarily composed of galacturonic acid and glucose in addition to small amounts of arabinose and galactose. This study demonstrated that CCP may enhance the innate immune responses and potentially improve the immune functions in the body.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Cortical deafness is a rare auditory dysfunction caused by damage to brain auditory networks. The aim was to report alterations of functional connectivity in intrinsic auditory, motor, and sensory networks in a cortical deafness patient. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old woman suffered a right putaminal hemorrhage. Eight years earlier, she had suffered a left putaminal hemorrhage and had minimal sequelae. She had quadriparesis, imbalance, hypoesthesia, and complete hearing loss. DIAGNOSES: She was diagnosed with cortical deafness. After 6 months, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and diffuse tensor imaging (DTI) were performed. DTI revealed that the acoustic radiation was disrupted while the corticospinal tract and somatosensory track were intact using deterministic tracking methods. Furthermore, the patient showed decreased functional connectivity between auditory and sensorimotor networks. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent in-patient stroke rehabilitation therapy for 2 months. OUTCOMES: Gait function and ability for activities of daily living were improved. However, complete hearing impairment persisted in 6 months after bilateral putaminal hemorrhagic stroke. LESSONS: Our case report seems to suggest that functional alterations of spontaneous neuronal activity in auditory and sensorimotor networks are related to motor and sensory impairments in a patient with cortical deafness.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Most women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are diagnosed with the disease in their reproductive years, but the incidence and prevalence of SLE among women of childbearing age have not been studied. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence and prevalence of SLE among the Korean women of childbearing age. METHODS: Women aged 20 to 44 years with SLE were identified from National Health Insurance Service - National Health Information Database (2009-2016), which contain health information of approximately 97% of the Korean population. SLE was defined by International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision code, M32. Incidence and prevalence were calculated per 100,000 person-years and stratified by year and age. RESULTS: A total of 12,756 women with SLE were identified. The incidence of SLE from 2011 to 2016 among women in childbearing years was 8.18/100,000 person-years (95% CI 7.94-8.43), with the highest incidence in 2016 (8.56/100,000 person-years, 95% CI 7.95-9.17) and the lowest incidence in 2012 (7.85/100,000 person-years, 95% CI 7.28-8.42). The prevalence of SLE from 2009 to 2016 among women in childbearing years was 77.07/100,000 person-years (95% CI 75.76-78.39), with the highest prevalence in 2014 (79.47/100,000 person-years, 95% CI 77.64-81.30) and the lowest in 2010 (74.19/100,000 person-years, 95% CI 72.45-75.93). The peak age for SLE incidence was between 25-39 years, and lower incidence was seen in the early (20-24 years) and late (40-44 years) childbearing age periods. There was an increasing trend in prevalence according to age in women of childbearing age, with the highest prevalence occurring in the 40-44 age group. CONCLUSIONS: The risk and burden of SLE are high among women during their childbearing years. This calls for special attention to this particular population group when allocating health resources.

RESUMO

The healthcare claims database is a database created using claims data accumulated while operating the government's health insurance system. The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) provides benefits for health promotion, prevention, diagnosis, and disease and injury treatment, as well as for rehabilitation, birth, and death. Ninety-seven percent of the total population is enrolled in the NHIS; individuals pay a monthly insurance contribution to the system, and the NHIS pays a portion of the cost of reimbursement items to the medical institution when the subscriber receives medical services. In this process, the NHIS and Health Insurance Review Agency (HIRA) decide on payment, and claims data are documented items that medical institutions claim to these government agencies. The NHIS and HIRA have established a database to support policy and academic research, and they provide this database to researchers. Health claims data are representative of the nation, reflecting the actual medical environment. They also shorten the time and cost required for research and have several advantages as research data. However, studies should be conducted with an understanding of the limitations of claims data, a sufficient understanding of the characteristics of the Korean insurance system, and criteria for providing reimbursed services. Moreover, validating the healthcare claims database will facilitate more useful and reliable research.

RESUMO

The aggregation properties of conjugated polymers can play a crucial role in their thin film structures and performance of electronic devices. Control of these aggregated structures is particularly important in producing efficient all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), considering that strong demixing of the polymer donor and polymer acceptor typically occurs during film formation because of the low entropic contribution to the thermodynamics of the system. Here, three naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based polymer acceptors with different backbone chlorination patterns are developed to investigate the effect of the chlorination patterns on the aggregation tendencies of the polymer acceptors, which greatly influence their crystalline structures, electrical properties, and device performances of the resultant all-PSCs and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The counterparts of NDI units, dichlorinated bithiophene (Cl2T2), monochlorinated bithiophene (ClT2), and dichlorinated thienylene-vinylene-thienylene (Cl2TVT), are employed to synthesize a series of P(NDIOD-Cl2T2), P(NDIOD-ClT2), and P(NDIOD-Cl2TVT) polymers. The P(NDIOD-Cl2T2) polymer takes advantage of strong noncovalent bonding induced by its chlorine substituents, resulting in the formation of optimal face-on oriented crystalline structures which are suitable for efficient all-PSC devices. In comparison, the P(NDIOD-Cl2TVT) polymer forms bimodal crystalline structures in thin films to yield optimal performances in the resultant OFETs. When the three chlorinated polymers are applied to all-PSCs with the PBDTTTPD polymer donor, P(NDIOD-Cl2T2) achieves a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.22% with an appropriate blend morphology and high fill factor, outperforming P(NDIOD-ClT2) (PCE = 4.80%) and P(NDIOD-Cl2TVT) (PCE = 5.78%). Our observations highlight the effectiveness of the chlorination strategy for developing efficient polymer acceptors and demonstrate the important role of polymer aggregation in modulating the blend morphology and all-PSC performance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the results of suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) and head impulse paradigm (HIMP) in acute vestibular neuritis (AVN). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Tertiary otology clinic. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTIONS: We tested 21 patients with AVN with the HIMP, SHIMP, and caloric tests, and we analyzed the relationships between the tests' results. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: For this study, we adopted vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gains in the SHIMP and HIMP, peak saccade velocity (PSV) of SHIMP which is another indicator of residual vestibular function, and canal paresis of caloric test. RESULTS: VOR gains showed significant correlation (R = 0.926, p < 0.001) between the SHIMP and HIMP, but VOR gains were slightly lower in the SHIMP than in the HIMP (mean difference 0.07 ±â€Š0.09, p < 0.001). The difference between the HIMP and SHIMP gains was slightly larger on the affected side (0.10 ±â€Š0.09) than on the healthy side (0.03 ±â€Š0.09). The PSV of SHIMP had significant correlation with HIMP gain and canal paresis. Sixteen of 21 patients showed 100% ipsilesional caloric canal paresis, and eight (50%) of them showed no anti-compensatory saccade (direction toward head rotation) in the SHIMP. However, they showed not extremely low VOR gain but variable VOR gain. CONCLUSION: The new parameters of SHIMP might be used as complement for evaluating vestibular function in AVN. However, the clinical impact of the saccades of SHIMP in AVN has not been revealed clearly yet. This question should be investigated in further studies.

RESUMO

In this study, the antioxidant properties of Viviparus contectus (V. contectus) extract were evaluated for various radical scavenging activities, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), ABTS radical scavenging activity and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). In addition, inhibition effect of the V. contectus extract against DNA scission induced by hydroxyl radical was measured. We also studied the protective effect of V. contectus extract against oxidative damage through measurements of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Chang cells and zebrafish embryo. We found that V. contectus extract contains strong radical scavenging activities and antioxidant properties, which prevent tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP)-induced oxidative stress, enhance cell viability, reduce ROS production, inhibit oxidative damage and improve mitochondrial function in Chang cells. Also, we determined that the V. contectus extract reduced ROS production mediated by t-BHP induced oxidative stress on zebrafish embryo.
